Russia Improving, But Not
Good Enough
Canada notched its second consecutive 7-0
victory in the 2002 Olympics, this time buy downing Russia. The victory
clinched a berth in the medal round, although that was all but a formality
as no nation is yet ready to challenge Canada or the United States in
women's hockey.
The world's top female player led the way,
as Hayley Wickenheiser opened the scoring and then set up two goals by
linemate Danielle Goyette.
Dana Antal, Cherie Piper, Jennifer Botterill and Isabelle Chartrand scored
the other goals for Canada.
To illustrate how lopsided the game was, Canada outshot Russia 60-6.
Goaltender Sami Jo Small did not face a real shot until Ekaterina
Pachkevich's slapshot from the high slot at 12:08 of the second period. In
the first two games, the Canadians outshot their opposition 126-17.
The game marked a milestone for Canadian veteran defenseman Therese
Brisson who played her 100th international game.
