Canada Rolls Over
Sweden
Canada's Women's Olympic hockey team
completed the preliminary round of the 2002 Winter Olympic Games with a
perfect 3-0 record after a convincing 11-0 victory over Sweden.
Canada got off to a slow star, but exploded
for four goals in the second period and six more in the third to earn the
victory. Jayna Hefford lead the attack for Canada, scoring her first goal
of the tournament and adding three assists. Jennifer Botterill was also
hot, scoring a pair of goals and adding an assist.
Kim St-Pierre recorded the win in goal for Canada, notching her second
consecutive shutout at the 2002 games. This time she did have more work,
as Canada surrendered 22 shots on goal - 5 more than the previous 2 games
combined.. It was St-Pierre's 31st national team victory.
The win set up a Canada-Finland showdown
with the winner going to the gold medal game while the Swedes played the
Americans. Realistically the games continued to formalities, as it would
have been an enormous shock to see any other nation than Canada or the US
in the gold medal final
