Canada Advances To Gold
Medal Game
The Canadian women's hockey team faced some
adversity and came through with fly colors in the gold-medal advancement
game vs. Finland. The Finns held a slim 3-2 entering the third
period, but Canada came from behind to score five unanswered goals to win
7-2.
Despite the surprising Finn's two period
lead, there was never much concern among the Canadian players.
"You guys (the media) would probably
really laugh if you'd been in the dressing room," Therese Brisson
said of the casual intermission atmosphere. "We were totally not
worried at all.
"We talked about sealing things off on defence and not giving them
any uneven rushes. Finland is a good team and when you make a mistake
they'll capitalize on it so we wanted to eliminate our errors, and it was
just a matter of time before the puck starting going in."
Brisson and Hayley Wickenheiser scored two goals each for Canada, while
Jayna Hefford, Vicky Sunohara and Cassie Campbell added singles. Breakaway
goals by Wickenheiser and Hefford six seconds apart early in the third
sparked Canada's scoring explosion.
Tiia Reima scored twice and Katja Riipi once for Finland.
Canada outshot Finland 54-18 in the game.
"I think it's great we had such a tough game," said
Campbell. "We've had some easy ones and we know that if we played the
U.S. in the final it's going to be tough."
