Future Trends Canada ’72
Background
Information:
Future
Trends, Ltd. produced an impressive 101-card standard-size set to celebrate the 20th
anniversary of the 1972 Summit Series between the Soviets and the Canadiens.
The cards were available initially only at
The Bay stores (Canadian department store) and were sold in
10-card foil packs with no factory sets.
All 70 players of the Canadian and Russian teams are represented, and
30 additional special cards capture unforgettable moments from the series.
Between one and two special cards, signed in gold paint pen by living
Canadian players, were randomly inserted into each foil case.
Only one Russian player, Vladislav Tretiak, signed cards.
Supposedly each of the signers signed only 750 cards for insertion
and distribution within the packs. These
cards were specially coated with a swirl pattern over the autograph.
Reportedly, The Bay also issued 2500 autographed sets without the
special coating, but this has never been confirmed.
The card fronts
feature borderless black and white, action or posed pictures.
A white, red, and gold stripe cuts across the bottom of the card face
and intersects the ’72 Hockey Canada logo at the lower right corner.
The backs carry additional photos, biographical information, series
statistics, sportswriters’ editorial comments, and player quotes.
Card number 40 features Phil Esposito’s September 8, 1972 address
to the nation. The card number
appears in a blue oblong design within the bottom red stripe on both sides.
The ’72 Hockey Canada logo also appears in the local right corner
of the back.
The set was issued
in both an English and a French version.
The production quantities were reportedly 9,000 English and 1,000
French 12-box cases. Also
released were 1972 uncut sheet sets. Signed
cards generally command 100 to 150 times the values below.
These cards are the most
popular cards used by autograph seeking collectors.
