EPILOGUE

In a moment that will long be cherished by Detroit Red Wing fans, aged Vyacheslav Fetisov hoisted the Stanley Cup over his head during the team's victory lap. It was the crowning achievement for the first Russian to join the NHL. In 1989, Fetisov received permission from the Soviet state to sign with the New Jersey Devils.

Such a move was unheard of in 1972, but hockey diplomacy started the thaw in the Cold War. Throughout the '70s and '80s, Soviet teams toured NHL arenas and battled other national teams in the Canada Cup. The interaction ultimately led to an exodus of Russians into the NHL.

They did not know it at the time, but Team Canada had, for better or worse, ushered in hockey's modern era. The sport would never be the same.
