In all, there were five Canada Cup series: 1976, 1981, 1984, 1987 and 1991. The world’s best players, including National Hockey League stars, competed. Team Canada won the Cup four times, and the Soviet Union won it once, in 1981. In the 1987 series, the combination of Mario Lemieux and Wayne Gretzky proved too much for the Soviets.
