It speaks volumes when an 8 time Stanley Cup
champion claims says "I had been on Stanley Cup teams but it was nothing
quite like winning against the Soviets that year."
Savard had an uncanny record against
the Soviets in that series: he was undefeated against them! After sitting out
the opening game loss, Savard played in the Canadian win in game 2 and in the
tie game in game 3. However Savard suffered a hairline fracture in his leg in
that game, and was unable to participate in game 4.
Savard was expected to be done for
the series but
because there was quite a distance between games 4 and 5 due to travel and a
Canadian exhibition tour of Sweden, Savard was able to get 10 full days of rest
at home before getting clearance to return to action. He made his way to Moscow
and participated in games 6, 7 and 8 - all of which were Canadian victories.
Thus Savard went 4-0-1 in
competition against the Soviets that year!
Savard was also a member of the 1976
Canada Cup team which he claims is the best team ever iced.
