The Spengler Cup
The Spengler Cup has developed from a tournament
for exiled nations into a Christmas time tradition on the international hockey
scene.
The
Spengler Cup is the oldest European tournament for club teams. Dr. Carl Spengler
of Davos, Switzerland donated the championship in 1923. The tournament would be
hosted in Davos, and special invites were reserved for the the best club teams
from Germany and Austria. Both of those nations were banned from IIHF sanctioned
competitions following World War I.
After those initial years, the Spengler became a
5 team hockey tournament for weak hockey nations. Great Britain, Italy,
Switzerland were regular challengers for the championship.
Although the Czechs began participating in the
1960s and the Soviets in the 1970s, the championship really jumped to the
forefront in 1984 when a group of Canadians formed a team under the name of Team
Canada. Canada's inclusion help to legitimatize the tourney over the years to
come. Canada, usually comprised of university players and ex-pats, including
many ex-NHLers who found employment with European club teams, would win 9
championships since 1984.
Here is a look at the list of champions:
